There is nothing I enjoy more than writing villains! The main characters are only as interesting as their antagonist. While there are many types, as a paranormal writer, none are so fascinating to me as the monsters.
Astrid Cadell is my favorite that I have written so far. She may not have many layers, but she has been fun to write. She is unhinged and leans heavily into her impulsivity. I created her to be pretty much the Id incarnate. She has her reasons, which I touch on and explore in book 2. In book 1, she is our silent antagonist, pulling her web in the shadows.
When creating Astrid, I tried to think of our Id-based villains of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time, like Padan Fain, but with a spice of Moghedien. For those who have not read the series, and are fans of fantasy, I highly recommend it!
Outside of this, my villains tend to be vile. They are not evil in the sense where they are morally gray, believing they are saving the world by their actions. They are power hungry and enjoy the act of manipulation. I do plan on writing other types of antagonists, but for now I have been exploring this style of villain.
